Eternally in vogue, the past is a constant source of inspiration for interiors and none is truer than that of the Mid Century era. With its sleek lines and crisp shapes the minimalists in us are drawn to the fresh look.

New this autumn, we have collaborated with Tilly Hemingway, daughter of Red or Dead co-founder Wayne Hemingway to curate a Mid Century Modern edit. Tilly explains more about why this movement continues to capture people’s imagination.

After a period of austerity, shortages and the understandably forced dourness of the Second World War years, the design community led an optimistic design revolution in the early 1950s that was restrained, tasteful, trustingly modern and yet timeless.

It is these design attributes that many designers aspire to and what draws current day designers back to the Mid Century Modern aesthetic time and time again.

The mid century modern aesthetic is minimal, refined and accessible. It consists of sculptural designs & textures and muted earthy tones such as warm greys, mustard, olive, teal, burnt orange and dusty pinks, often teamed with a bright highlight for a pop of colour.

Mid Century furniture is easily identifiable through its straight lines and rounded angles with wood, metal and fibre glass being typical materials, whilst patterns are often bold, abstract and asymmetrical.

Adding Mid Century touches to your home is easy. It sits perfectly with both old and new so you don’t need to re-design your entire home to achieve the look. Our patterned cushions make the perfect accessory for a contemporary sofa. Smaller items such as a floor or ceiling lamps, wall mirrors, and vases can be inexpensive and are easy to find online and at antique markets.

A feature wall painted in a muted earthy tone such as warm grey, mink or teal is an affordable way of transforming a room with the addition of a graphic poster or photographic print.
